Why is it that regardless of our best intentions we repeatedly don’t accomplish the goals we set for ourselves? Are we excessively ambitious when we set them? Or that we aren’t ambitious enough and hence lose interest. Maybe our goals are not sufficiently clear so it’s not really obvious what we’re going for. Maybe they’re not goals we actually want anyway, but are things we think we “should” desire according to what our boss or our family or culture expects of us. If any of these factors apply to the goals we set then it is going to be an mounting struggle to achieve them.
But let us suppose that the goals we have taken on are ones we are keen on and ones we really wish for. Why, then is it that, customarily we still can’t attain them?
Well, there is an inherent difficulty with goal setting and this is it. Goals, are necessarily set for the future. So on every occasion you focus on them you are reminded of something you do not yet have or something you have not yet accomplished. And that can result in lowering your mood and reducing your motivation. You are starting from a place of having your happiness be something in the future. You end up feeling so far away from where you want to be that it reduces your self-esteem and can finish up being worse than not having any goals at all.
So what you have to do is work back from your end goal and break it up into smaller steps, and then break it up again until you have targets that can be finished in 24 hours. Treat it like a map and then put it to one side.
Choose daily goals that are trackable so that you can write down your successes on a chart or in a diary. For example, if you wanted to drop nine pounds by a particular time. Your daily goals could be to go for a walk, eat two items of fruit, investigate healthy recipes and read something that inspires you. You might construct a chart to put on the wall so you can check off your daily objectives as you attain them.
If you observe you are not getting close enough to your final goal by the deadline, change or increase your daily objectives. You have full creative control.
This focus on what you are achieving every day builds momentum and self-esteem because you will go to bed knowing that you have done what you set out to do. You don’t have to wait until you accomplish the end goal and have lost twelve lbs. You will already be a success, your self worth will rise and, if you keep at it, your end goal is assured.
